Spring Grove Tree Walk & Arboretum Kick Off

Spring Grove Tree Walk & Arboretum Kick Off

The Spring Grove Tree Walk to kick off the establishment of the arboretum is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2020 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Sponsored by the  Friends of the Cemetery, the social-distanced, self-guided family walking tour will showcase 30 of the 68 different species found on the grounds. This inaugural event qualifies Spring Grove to apply for Arboretum Accreditation and would be the first and only arboretum in Medina County. Spring Grove Cemetery is located at 775 East Washington Street in beautiful, historic Medina, Ohio.
Spring Grove is a fine example of an “urban forest” -- a forest or a collection of trees that grow within a city, town or a suburb. Friends of the Cemetery commissioned Bartlett Tree Experts to complete an extensive survey and inventory of the 613 trees that grow on the grounds.
Each family will be offered a free tree seedling, courtesy of Bartlett Tree Experts (while supplies last) suitable for their yard: Red Bud for smaller gardens, Bald Cypress for medium-sized lawns, White Swamp Oak for large spaces. Chad Klink, Board Certified Master Arborist, will also be on hand to answer questions.
“The Friends have already funded the survey and inventory and will also provide funding for labeling of trees section by section over a period of years. We will continue to fund the maintenance of existing trees and purchase new trees as we have done in the past at Spring Grove”, said Teresa Merkle, President of the Board of Trustees for Friends of the Cemetery.
Attendees should dress for the weather -- the event will be held rain or shine. There is easy access for strollers, wagons, and wheelchairs. Starting point for the walk will be at the front of the Mears Building where there is ample parking. Maps will be provided and each of the 30 trees featured on the walk will be signed and labeled. Kids of all ages will enjoy the tree-themed scavenger hunt.
The arboretum will be a collaboration between Friends of the cemetery and Medina Parks, Forestry and Service Departments.
The Friends of the Cemetery’s mission includes the historic preservation, beautification and maintenance of Spring Grove Cemetery and Old Town Graveyard.
