The Friends of the Cemetery held its first meeting at the Spring Grove Chapel on November 23, 1997. At our inception, we organized work days, developed a brochure, launched a semi-annual newsletter, and hosted historical walks in the cemetery. We sought funding from charitable foundations and community groups, and in early 1999, we became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

We have received generous contributions from local charitable foundations and the estate of Edward C. Mears. These donations, along with the support of our members, enabled us to achieve the goals outlined in the 1997 Spring Grove Master Plan. Currently, we are working on the 2018 Spring Grove Master Plan.

Through the years, due to the efforts of the Friends of the Cemetery, Spring Grove was added to the Register of National Historic Places in 2006 and, in 2022, was listed in the National Park's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. Spring Grove Cemetery was also designated as a Level II arboretum by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in 2021 and listed on the Morton Register of Arboreta.

Members of the Friends of the Cemetery include residents of Medina as well as individuals from other parts of the U.S. and around the world. Many of these members have family and friends buried at Spring Grove and Old Town and want to ensure that their loved ones' resting places are preserved and maintained. Others are interested in Medina's history and genealogy and view the cemeteries as important repositories of the town's past. Additionally, some appreciate the cemeteries for the beautiful green spaces they provide for walking, jogging, gardening, and enjoying nature. We welcome anyone who has an interest in the preservation and conservation of Medina's historic cemeteries.
