SPRING GROVE CEMETERY
Generations of local residents, who have historically considered Medina and the surrounding townships their home, are interred at Spring Grove Cemetery. Established in 1883, this cemetery is representative of the Rural Cemetery Movement, which gained prominence in the aftermath of the Civil War. Notable characteristics of this cemetery design include mature forests, winding pathways, rustic stone structures, and picturesque lakes.
Currently, Spring Grove Cemetery has been meticulously restored to its former grandeur, featuring lakes, formal gardens, and over 600 trees distributed throughout the grounds. The chapel, constructed in 1884, has undergone comprehensive restoration, alongside the 1892 grand carriage entryway. The mausoleum from the post-WWI era has had its roof, stained glass windows, bronze doors, and exterior stone walls and interior fully refurbished. Three columbaria have been designed to integrate harmoniously into the historic landscape, situated adjacent to an aesthetically appealing, hard-edged lake. Furthermore, the Baby Section is maintained with particular care and attention.
Spring Grove Cemetery received recognition as a listing on the Register of National Historic Places in 2006. In 2022, it was further acknowledged as part of the National Park Service's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. Additionally, in 2021, Spring Grove Cemetery was designated a Level II arboretum by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and is also included in the Morton Register of Arboreta.
